IN-BETWEEN
Exhibition Design

"By looking through the lens of contemporary artists, we invite visitors to question where they truly are—and who they become—in transit."
DESIGN CHALLENGE:
Translate the concept of liminality into spatial form through the exhibition’s layout, staging, and atmosphere.
SPATIAL PLANNING AND OBJECT PLACEMENT
-
Placed artwork to emphasize dialog
-
Utilized curved walls and central seating to draw visitors into spaces of connection, collective observation, and introspection.
-
Created disconnection through minimally filled rooms, heightens art placement and hard-edge spaces.

STAGING, ATMOSPHERE, AND INTERPRETATION
Determined materials (atmosphere palette, material palette and color palette), lighting, furniture, and equipment.
-
Custom benches are equiped with hidden music systems to the maintain minimlisim.
-
Benches are oriented outward to evoke the familiar act of window-watching in transit, reinforcing the exhibition’s themes of movement and liminality.
-
Work by Ru Marshall reflects the light from Madeline Hollander’s Heads & Tails, creating a visual dialogue between the two works.
-
Dan Graham’s Portal anchors the space as Katherine Opie’s Highways rises overhead, enveloping visitors.
-
Below the title wall, visitors’ feet are visible, reinforcing the theme of being “neither here nor there.”
-
A glass window at the top of the wall allows light from Heads & Tails to spill into the adjacent gallery, maintaining visual continuity.
-
Curved exhibition walls wrap around the space, focusing visitors’ attention on video works by Mark Wallinger and Vanessa Renwick.
-
An Osaka Sofa follows the wall’s curvature, reinforcing the rounded spatial form.
