SOLARIONE

Material Exploration

Inspired by traditional paper lanterns, Solarione emphasizes the skeleton of a lamp.

Solarione diverges from the typical symmetry of spherical lamps, both on the horizontal and vertical axes, the hardware compresses the lamp into the organic flow of the shade's silhouette.

Reed length was set for the top half of the shade (linearly placed reeds) and determined through fabrication and pliability testing for the remaining body of the shade.

3D-printed PLA joints are formed with tight 4.0mm holes to accommodate a 3.5mm reed that bends to create the lamp's silhouette.

NOTE* Although the reed's diameter was specified at 3.5mm, the actual material averaged to 3.8mm in diameter. To account for tolerance, each joining hole is 4.0mm.

The angle and orientation of holes are dependent on reed direction, in which the middle joint has both angled holes facing upwards for linearly placed reeds and horizontal holes for bowing reeds.

TESTING THE PLIABILITY

To make the reed pliable, it was soaked for 30 minutes. During this stage, the reed expands up to a 4.0mm diameter, and is more forgiving.

To achieve the organic bow of the shade, the reed was placed in the joinery pieces and then re-soaked, for an additional 10 minutes.

Then, using a jig made out of 2 pieces of plywood and a wire threaded between them, the wire was tightened until the shade was compressed into the proper height and curve.

Each reed length was then adjusted to create the rendered silhouette and separated with dividers to keep the reeds equally spaced during the drying process.
